Switzerland Defeats Colombia 4-3, in Penalty Kicks,  advance to Quarterfinals to face Argentina  @ the FIFA World Cup 2026

VANCOUVER, CANADA(SMI-GLOBAL-SPORTS-JUNE 11-JULY 19, 2026)-

World#14, Switzerland and Colombia played a very thigh game with man to man coverage from start to finish, with few shots towards goal that resulted in a scoreless draw in regulation game time and Extra-time periods.

Colombia on its first major counter-attack, defender Gustavo Puerta kicked a curled shot towards right goal post intercepted by goalkeeper Gregor Kobel who parry the ball out bound at 21' mark.

​

Switzerland answered back 10' later with two consecutive counter attacks within 2' apart, when Fabian Rieder inside the 18', shot a left-footed towards goal but its was denied (30') by Camilo Vargas and Dan Ndoye kicked a left footed ending in the hands of Vargas at 32' mark.

​

The rest of the game kept going in similar fashion that both teams ended the game in penalty shoot out.

​

Granit Xhaka, Zeki Amdouni, Cedric Itten, & Ruben Vargas score in the penalty kicks to give Switzerland 4-3, win over Colombia.

With the victory, Switzerland advance to Quarterfinals for the fourth time in World Cup competition to face World #1, Argentina.
